How to Set Up a New iPhone in Under 10 Minutes

Getting a new iPhone is exciting, but the setup process can feel daunting if you're not sure what to expect. The good news is that Apple has streamlined this process significantly, and with a few smart shortcuts, you can be up and running in less time than it takes to make a coffee.

Here's how to set up your new iPhone in under 10 minutes.

1. Use Quick Start to transfer your data (2 minutes)

If you're upgrading from another iPhone, Quick Start is by far the fastest way to move everything over.

  1. Turn on your new iPhone and place it near your old one.
  2. A Quick Start screen will appear on your old iPhone tap "Continue."
  3. Hold your new iPhone over the animation shown on your old device to scan it.
  4. Enter your old iPhone's passcode on the new device when prompted.
  5. Choose "Transfer from iPhone" and select whether you want all your apps, data, and settings transferred directly.

This method transfers your apps, photos, messages, and settings wirelessly, without needing a computer or cables.

2. Set up Face ID or Touch ID (1 minute)

Once your data starts transferring in the background, you'll be prompted to set up biometric security.

  1. Follow the on-screen instructions to position your face within the frame (for Face ID) or place your finger on the Home button (for Touch ID).
  2. Complete the scan by moving your head slightly or repositioning your finger as instructed.
  3. Set a backup passcode in case biometric login fails.

3. Restore from a backup, if needed (varies)

If you're not transferring directly from another iPhone say, you're setting up from an iCloud or Finder backup instead this is the step where that happens.

  1. Choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" or "Restore from Mac or PC" during setup.
  2. Sign in with your Apple ID if prompted.
  3. Select the most recent backup.

Note: this step can take longer than 10 minutes depending on your library size and internet speed, but your iPhone will be usable while the rest downloads in the background.

4. Sign in with your Apple ID (1 minute)

If it wasn't already carried over from Quick Start, you'll be asked to sign in.

  1. Enter your Apple ID and password.
  2. Enter the two-factor authentication code sent to your other devices.
  3. Agree to the Terms and Conditions.

5. Enable essential settings (2 minutes)

While your data continues transferring in the background, take a moment to enable a few settings that make a big difference:

  • iCloud Photos: Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos, to keep your photo library synced.
  • Find My iPhone: Settings > [your name] > Find My, to protect your device if it's ever lost.
  • App Store automatic updates: Settings > App Store > enable "App Updates."
  • Notifications: Review Settings > Notifications for your most-used apps to avoid being overwhelmed later.

6. Organize your Home Screen (2 minutes)

Once your apps have finished downloading:

  1. Touch and hold any app icon until the icons jiggle.
  2. Drag apps into folders or your preferred order.
  3. Swipe to the App Library to check for anything that didn't make it back onto your Home Screen.
