iPhone 18 Pro Max : Everything You Need to Know

Apple officially unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, alongside its first foldable device, the iPhone Duo. Here's a quick look at what's new, and how it stacks up against last year's iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Performance: A20 Pro Chip

The iPhone 18 Pro Max runs on Apple's new A20 Pro chip, built on a 2nm process for better efficiency. RAM stays at 12GB, the same as last year. Apple also added improved internal cooling, helping the phone sustain performance during heavy tasks like gaming or video editing.

Cameras: Variable Aperture Arrives

The main 48MP Pro Fusion camera now features a true variable aperture — a first for any iPhone. It can physically widen or narrow depending on the scene, improving low-light shots and giving more control over background blur. The rest of the camera system has also been refreshed, though full telephoto zoom details are still emerging.

Battery Life: A Bigger Cell

Apple confirmed a 5,391 mAh battery for the SIM-tray model, up 11.7% from the iPhone 17 Pro Max. eSIM-only units go even further, since removing the SIM tray frees up space for extra battery cells — Apple says physical-SIM models lose about two hours of video playback versus eSIM-only versions. Combined with chip efficiency, overall battery life is up roughly 16%.

Smaller Dynamic Island

Reworked Face ID components let Apple shrink the Dynamic Island, freeing up a bit more screen space on the 6.9-inch display. It's a subtle change, not a redesign.

Connectivity: New C2 Modem

Connectivity is another area where Apple could make an interesting move. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to use Apple's next-generation C2 modem, which could bring improvements in cellular performance and efficiency. Apple may also expand its satellite capabilities, potentially allowing more features and services to work when traditional mobile networks aren't available.

Design and Charging

The aluminum unibody design continues, with Ceramic Shield on the back and Ceramic Shield 2 on the display. Wired charging is also faster than before.

Colors

The iPhone 18 Pro Max comes in four finishes: Burgundy, Glacier, Silver, and Black. Burgundy is the new standout shade, replacing last year's Cosmic Orange, and both the Pro and Pro Max share the same color lineup.
